Odisha achieved the much-awaited Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its ‘Rasgulla’. Sources said that the Geographical Indication Registrar, Chennai issued a certificate for lodging this sweet as ‘Odisha Rasgulla’ under item Geographical Indication (Registration & Protection), 1999.
This certificate will remain valid till 22 February 2028. The GI tag recognizes that an object is special in a particular area or area.
From year 2015, there is a war between the start of Rasgulla between Odisha and West Bengal. In 2017 Bengal received a GI tag for its ‘Rasgulla’. Next year, Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC) had applied to give the GI tag to ‘Odisha Rasgulla’ in association with the group of Rasoglu businessmen Utkal Mithan Professional Committee.
The BJP leader Pradipat Naik said that due to negligence of the state government it was delayed in meeting it. ‘Rasgulla’ has been a part of the centuries-old tradition of the state played for Lord Jagannath, and it is also mentioned in the 15th century Oriya poetry ‘Dandi Ramayan’.
